What causes multiple ulcers in the mouth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have three ulcers that look like sores in my mouth, one is on my lip which is the most painful and the other one is under my tongue but I feel no pain at all. The last one is on my gum (not painful). I also noticed a white head-looking spot at the back of my throat (to the side). I feel there is something in my throat that is not going down. There is a movable lump that is kind of big under my neck, and I feel another movable lump in my cheek (both left side). It has been a few days that the tip of my tongue also feels burnt but actually it is not. Here and there I feel a very slight ear pain but nothing major. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am a maxillofacial surgeon and I will be answering your doubts in detail. I guess you do not have any intraoral pictures or any other reference materials. How many days is it exactly since you noticed them? My diagnosis would depend precisely on that. Do you have any medical issues like hypertension or diabetes, or are you on any medications? Are you pregnant or a lactating mother? Kindly answer.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The one on the gum appeared first about two weeks ago, then the one on the lip, and then I noticed the under-the-tongue one yesterday (do not know how long that has been there). The small dot at the back of my throat is also what I noticed today so not sure how long I had it for.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Okay, so if this is occurring so sequentially, then it is likely to be a severe Infection. I asked you about your medical history because you need to start antibiotic prophylaxis straight away. You can also rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water several times a day or rinse your mouth with Chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash. Do let me know your medical or medication history, that would allow me to differentiate between the cause, whether these ulcers are caused by bacterial origin, or if they have any underlying medical condition to it. So let me know. Your ulcers look too severe and acute, and you will need to start treatment straight away. Do you have any allergies to any antibiotics or any medications in general that you know of? Confirm this before I prescribe the prophylaxis. Kindly share your medical history too (if any).

I hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.
