What causes ovarian cysts to recur even after undergoing cystectomy and taking medications?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 33-year-old female and have obesity. My weight is 103 kg, and my height is 167 cm. My period is always irregular because of my weight. Last year, I had a cyst that required a surgery to remove the cyst. After that, I had regular checkups with my doctor. As my period was irregular, the doctor suggested me the tablet Yasmin (Estrogen and Progesterone) for three months. However, now I have a cyst on the same side I had earlier. My question is, how did I get a cyst if I took the tablet, Yasmin? What I know is that birth control pills prevent cysts if it is not formed yet. Should I continue taking Yasmin? Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern about recurring ovarian cysts. From the history you provided, the cystectomy was done last year, and you have taken the pills recently for three months. The cyst could have grown when you were not taking the tablet Yasmin but must not have been visible then, as small ones sometimes cannot be seen on ultrasound. Obesity is the reason for recurring cysts and irregular periods. The tablet Yasmin will surely help but will show better results if combined with weight loss, so I suggest you continue the tablet Yasmin along with diet and exercise. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I did not stop taking the Yasmine tablet. I started taking it three months ago and stopped it two weeks ago. I waited for my period, but it did not come. I had a period twice, though, in the last two months. The cyst size is 4. Is there another treatment rather than surgery? Currently, I am taking the tablet Rybelsus (Semaglutide) for weight loss for the third week.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I meant that the cyst could have grown before you started taking the Yasmin tablet. Could you specify the size of the cyst, 4 cm or 4 mm? If the cyst size is 4 cm, you would need surgery to remove it. No treatment can reduce the size of the cyst. The tablet Yasmine is only to prevent cysts, but many other factors can still cause the cyst to grow.

Thank you.
