Why does my penis hurt during erection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My penis hurts during erection. My partner's sex drive has increased a lot in the past weeks. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Painful erection can be due to the following reasons:

1) Infection - the common cause is urinary tract infection or sexually transmitted infections.

2) Balanitis – redness of the glans penis (tip of your penis), itching, irritation, discharge, unpleasant smell, tight foreskin. It could be due to allergy to soaps, bacterial infection, fungal infection, or sex with a new partner. Local application of steroids with antifungal or antibacterial cream with proper hygiene will help you. Circumcision can be done for recurrent infection if not done already.

3) Prostatitis - inflammation of the prostate gland due to infection or injury.

4) Urethritis - inflammation or infection of the urethra.

5) Renal calculi can cause a painful erection.

6) Peyronie's disease - scar tissue inside the penis causing a painful erection. If you would like to confirm, you can share a picture of an erect penis.

7) Neuropathy due to diabetes.
