Why do I have a painful bump near my ear canal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

There is a bump just outside my ear canal, and it hurts. My ear seems to be blocked when I lie down, and I think it is a bit watery.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Thanks for briefing me regarding your concern. I had a detailed look at the picture you sent (attachment removed to protect patient identity).

There is absolutely nothing you need to worry about, as this is a very common condition that we see regularly. You appear to have developed an infection of the hair follicle in the outer ear, a condition called otitis externa.

You can consider the following advice:

  1. Take Ciplox (Ciprofloxacin) 750 mg, one tablet twice a day after food, 12 hours apart, for one week. This is an antibiotic and may cause loose motions. If loose motions become severe, you can take probiotics twice a day for one week.

  2. Take Zerodol TH 8 mg (Aceclofenac and Thiocolchicoside) or its equivalent, one tablet twice a day after food, 12 hours apart, for one week.

  3. Take Ultracet (Tramadol and Acetaminophen) or its equivalent, one tablet at night after food for the next one week.

  4. Take Pan D (Pantoprazole and Domperidone) or its equivalent, one tablet, once in the morning before breakfast for the next one week.

  5. Keep the ear dry and avoid using earbuds.

  6. You can use antifungal ear drops containing Clotrimazole and Lidocaine, three drops, three times a day, for the next five days.

In otitis externa, you may develop very severe ear pain that does not easily resolve with painkillers. Typically, it takes around three days for symptoms to start improving if the antibiotic is effective.

If your symptoms reduce over the next few days, it is better to get yourself reexamined by an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist for reevaluation and further treatment.

If there is anything more you need to know or ask, please let me know at the earliest, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

As I said, there is nothing too serious, and you do not need to worry, as things should improve in a few days. Please take adequate care.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
