I have PCOS. Can I take birth control pill post intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am trying to take birth control pills. I have bought Ovral L and Ovral G. I have been diagnosed with PCOS/PMOS before four months and I am exercising regularly. Till last month, my period was regular. Is it safe to take a birth control pill after intercourse? Can a birth control pill be used as an emergency contraceptive pill? I have heard that Ovral L can be used in emergencies too. What is the dose to be taken? Is it necessary to take I-pill along with a birth control pill? What happens if I take I-pill along with it? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The contraceptive pill should be taken on the first day of the cycle. When you experience menstrual bleeding, you can start the pill. After seven days, the intercourse is safe. I will not recommend contraception to be used as an emergency pill. I recommend you take Ovral G (Norgestrel with Ethinyl estradiol) and it helps to control the PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)/PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome)

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Does Ovral G help to control PCOS symptoms? Can I use Ovral L instead of Ovral G?

Kindly advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Ovral G contains Progesterone and has antiandrogenic properties. So it helps to control the symptoms of PCOS such as acne and excessive hair growth. Yes, you can use Ovral L (Ethinyl estradiol with Levonorgestrel) instead of Ovral G.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was involved in protected intercourse ten days before my last period, and have also taken an Ipill within two hours and another one after two days. I had a little spotting three weeks after the intercourse and got my hcg (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels tested and have attached my reports. What are the chances of getting pregnant and why are my periods delayed? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I have reviewed your reports (attachments have been removed to protect the patient's privacy), and the b-hcg levels show that you are not pregnant. The irregular bleeding can be due to the I-pill (Levonorgestrel).

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

I have not missed any dose, and was involved in a protected intercourse had sex three days after periods. With a doubt, i have taken an Unwanted 72 and Ovral l pills in the night as usual. I am concerned about the chances of getting pregnant. I will be continuing with my birth control pills as usual as this pack will last for three more weeks. Will this medication delay my periods? If so, what can be done? I also would like to know about the withdrawal bleeding in 5 to 10 days as I am also on birth control. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The fact that you have taken the ipill should protect from getting pregnant .Contraception cannot be taken irregularly as there are chances of hormones getting unbalanced and irregular bleeding can also occur. I would advise you to continue the medication.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have started taking ovral-l from the second day of my periods and it has been six days until now. Is that enough to prevent unwanted pregnancy? I will be taking my 21st pill of unwanted 72 at the end of this month. When can the withdrawal period be expected and what are the chances of getting pregnant. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

I had my period and started taking Ovral-L after that. I had sex in the same month and took an Unwanted 72 pill within five hours. I also continued taking Ovral-L regularly. If Ovral-L had not worked, then it would have likely been my ovulation date, after nine days past ovulation. In the morning, I noticed reddish spotting, very little in amount, and by evening, it turned pale brown, very light, and minimal. I again saw brownish-reddish discharge in the morning, slightly darker. The discharge appeared mucousy and pale brown. When wiped with tissue, it showed a light brown, mucous-like consistency with a slight tint.

My beta-hCG test was done, which was 16 days after the sexual activity. I took my Ovral-L pill at 11 PM and have been taking the pills regularly and on time every day. Could this bleeding be implantation bleeding? Was the beta-hCG test conclusive? If Ovral-L did not work and I had sex, which was the 8th day of my cycle, and ovulation was expected around mid-cycle, is there any chance the sperm survived? The person did not ejaculate inside me, but I am still concerned. Do nine days past ovulation allow enough time for an accurate hCG test result? What are the chances of pregnancy this cycle? Why am I experiencing this type of bleeding—is it hormonal or a withdrawal effect?

The bleeding has now stopped. It is only very light brown discharge now, and barely noticeable. I am scared. The bleeding was accompanied by minor cramps, but there is no more red spotting, just pale brown discharge in a very minimal quantity. I was on Ovral-L and completed the full 21-day course, taking it every day at the same time (11 PM). When I had sex in the afternoon, I had already taken 6 pills and took the next one that night. It was my 8th day of the cycle. I have not had any more bleeding since then, just a bit of whitish discharge that appears brown on tissue. I am really scared. What are the chances I could be pregnant?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

The Beta hCG test tell you aren't pregnant. There is no chance of pregnancy. You experience withdrawal if bleeding causes from both contraception and emergency pill.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I am concerned if I ovulated at the time of intercourse as implantation bleeding can occur at that time. Is there a chance of getting pregnant? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. Both contraceptions has the purpose to inhibit the ovulation which can prevent the chances of getting pregnant.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 21st Ovral-L pill was taken at 11 PM. My period started in the evening a few days later. The bleeding is lighter than normal but is a constant flow, with the normal period colour and the regular cramps I usually experience during my periods. My only question is: my actual period date is usually later, but this time my period started earlier, which was four days after I stopped Ovral-L, and the period was lighter than usual. So my question is, is Ovral-L working for me? Because the period came in the fourth week (after 21 days of pills). I am supposed to start the next pack from tomorrow, as today is the seventh day without pills. So, should I start? Is it working for me? Or should I switch to something stronger like Ovral-G? Is it necessary to switch to a stronger pill, or is Ovral-L enough for me if my only goal is pregnancy protection?

And if I do need to switch, how should I do it, based on the following information: today is my last pill-free day, and I am supposed to start the next pack of Ovral-L tomorrow. Should I continue with Ovral-L, or can I switch to Ovral-G? My weight is 68 kg, height 156 cm, and I have PCOD. My period is now a strong flow. Normally, my period lasts 5 to 6 days. Today is the fourth day. I will start the pills tomorrow. What should I start with? I also take Metital regularly twice a day.

How many days after taking the pill will I be protected? How many days after starting Ovral-L, or if I am switching to Ovral-G, will it be effective? My question is, if I am switching to another pill, how many days will it take before it starts working? I am switching after a 7-day gap.

Another question—as I mentioned, my period never starts early. It is always on time or 1 to 2 days late. My actual period start date is usually later, but this time it started earlier. Was this due to the birth control pills? It is said that withdrawal bleeding happens within 3 to 5 days after the 21st pill, and I got mine on the 4th day. So was this withdrawal bleeding, or did my period come early?

From the day the bleeding started to a few days later, the period was light and watery. Today it is heavier, but overall it is lighter than my usual periods. However, the colour is exactly like my period blood, and it is accompanied by back pain, which I normally have during periods. My beta hCG report was also done earlier.

Kindly advise.

Hello, Welcome back to icliniq.com

I advise you to continue the contraception for one more day.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my periods for five days. I had sex using the withdrawal method. I was on Ovral-L, taking it every day at night at 11 PM. This was my first month of use, starting early in my cycle. I never missed a dose and took it regularly and on time. On the day of sex, I took Unwanted 72 within 5 hours and also took my regular Ovral-L that night. I had sex in the afternoon, and by then I had already taken 6 pills, with the 7th pill taken at 11 PM that night. After finishing the 21st pill, I got my periods for several days. My period was lighter, but still had clots as usual. It was light for the first two days, heavy for the next two days, then light again for the last two days, which usually happens to me on the last days. It was a continuous flow. The bleeding started bright red and then became dark red, which is my normal period color. I started my second pack of pills during the bleeding. I took a beta hCG test several weeks after the sexual activity. My result was less than 2 IU/L. There is no chance of pregnancy, right? The guy did not ejaculate inside me. I am safe, right?

More details about my condition: I take Metital twice a day—once after lunch and once with Ovral-L after dinner. Is Ovral-L sufficient as an oral contraceptive for me? My weight is 69 kg, I have PCOS, and my height is 5 feet 1 inch. So, I took the test several weeks after sex and more than a month after my last period started. Is that enough time for a conclusive test? My beta hCG level was less than 2 IU/L. However, I have been having a lot of white discharge—sometimes clumpy, sometimes milky, sometimes watery and stretchy—for several days. Today, it is less compared to yesterday.

Kindly advise.

Hello, Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I advise you not to be worried about getting pregnant.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have got the test done 27 days after intercourse, Is it the right time to get the hcg beta test done? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Yes, it is the right time to get tested for pregnancy.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
