Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I snapped my penile frenulum last night and experienced bleeding. Still, some light bleeding was there in the morning. No pain. Do I retract the foreskin and bandage the area?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

A torn frenulum generally takes a couple of weeks to heal. The bleeding also subsides in a few hours unless you have a bleeding tendency or clotting factor deficiency. I suggest you give adequate rest to the area. There is no need to bandage it up, just keep a soft tissue in your underwear to help with the blood stains. In addition to this, I also suggest:

  1. Avoid intercourse or masturbation for a few weeks.

  2. Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory tablets twice a day for two to three days to reduce inflammation.

  3. Clean the area with water daily.

A torn frenulum generally heals by scarring. If the issue was not too bad, to begin with. There is a good chance that things will be completely normal and it would not bother you again. However, if it heals by dense scarring, there is a risk that it might bleed again, and cause pain and discomfort during the intercourse. If this happens, you may require to undergo a frenuloplasty or circumcision (a frenulum's surgical modification when its existence limits motion between related tissues). Just take it easy for the next couple of weeks and see how things go.

I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
