Will the prediabetic stage result in white spots on the gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with prediabetics (102 mg/dL) two months before. Now I notice white spots on my upper gums. Are the spots related to diabetes or is it a serious problem? Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your attachment (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), but your images are not very clear. But as of now, it is less likely to be because of diabetes and can possibly be because of some infection that has to be evaluated clinically. Once the pandemic of COVID 19 subsides, get it checked in a dental clinic. As you are in the prediabetic range, you are less likely to be prone to it. I suggest you do the following-

1. Gargle with lukewarm water and add a little salt to it. Do this for two to three times daily for three days.

2. Maintain proper oral hygiene that is, brushing twice daily and using Chlorhexidine mouthwash.

3. Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

4. Increase the intake of iron-rich foods such as dates, spinach, tomatoes, nuts, etc.

Meanwhile, you can start taking a capsule of Becosules (multivitamin supplement) once a day for 15 days.

I need to know a few more details. Do you have any habit of chewing tobacco or betel nut or a habit of smoking? Do you have any fever? Do you have a foul-smelling odor? Is it painful at that site? Is it increasing in size? Is it scrapable (are you able to wipe it up or remove it)? You need not worry if it is painless, not progressive, or if you do not have any habits. Once this viral outbreak is under control, get it evaluated clinically.

I hope this helps. Do get back in case of any further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

The details of my habits and symptoms are as follows-

  1. I do not smoke or chew tobacco or betel leaves.
  2. I have no fever.
  3. There is no foul smell.
  4. I have no pain.
  5. It is not scrapable, or removable. They are hard and tiny, and two to three pimple-like appearances occur at a place on the gum just above the teeth (right canine).

I experience severe dry mouth when stressed and also when slightly normal for the past eight months. Also, I have a scratchy throat that worsens when I talk loud. Please prescribe some medicines for dry mouth, scratchy throat, and white spots on the gums till the lockdown is over. I will consult the doctor after the lockdown period.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Glad to have you back.

It is good that you do not have any addiction. This will directly reduce the chances of any major problem that you were worried about. Your concern about dry mouth is a symptom of the prediabetic condition. Do not take any medicine. Treat it naturally as much as possible, just suggesting this since you are a naturopath. Drink water frequently. In a diabetic person, there is an increased frequency of urination so this is the reason why you experience thirst and dry mouth.

For itchy throat, gargle with lukewarm water and add a little salt to it. Do it two to three times daily. Now since you are in the prediabetic range, you have a scope to prevent yourself from going into the diabetic range. So, follow natural ways of reducing sugar levels. All your symptoms will reduce automatically.

Regarding your spots in the mouth, as you do not have any addictive habits, I need to know if there are any sharp tooth parts that are continuously causing trauma. Knowingly or unknowingly did you have any trauma from eating hot or hard foodstuffs? Do you have any gum infection? Is it painful? If not, then there are chances of ulcers, maybe because of stress.

A home remedy that you can follow is to apply ghee on that pimple spot at night. As prescribed previously, start taking the multivitamin tablet Becosule once daily for 15 days. If those spots are painful, then apply Mucopain (Benzocaine) gel over that for three to five times daily. With this, I expect you to start with a new schedule for fighting with prediabetes.

I wish you good health.

Thank you.
