Are nicotine pouches safer than smoking during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is 30 years old. She is 16 weeks pregnant and is still using nicotine pouches. She says they help her stay off cigarettes, but we are worried about the baby.

  1. Are pouches safer than smoking, or are they still risky?
  2. What are the pregnancy‑safe tools, such as behavioral support or nicotine alternatives, that she can use?
  3. Can e‑cigarettes or gum serve as stepping stones toward quitting completely?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Smoking cessation remains the best option and is strongly advised, especially during pregnancy, as it reduces the risk of complications. E‑cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) and vaping are no safer than traditional cigarettes, as they contain harmful chemicals and also increase cancer risk

If she is experiencing difficulty quitting, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), such as gum and patches, is an option. She should consult her obstetrician before using any over‑the‑counter NRT products, as these have usage limits. Smoking cessation counselling can also benefit her significantly

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

I hope this helps.
