Can I get pregnant if I had sex around the 15th to 20th day of my menstrual cycle with a 40-day cycle length?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have frequent urination problem and have been trying to conceive. I also have swollen breasts and a dark line from my belly button to my vagina. However, I had done a beta hCG blood test on the 28th day of my menstrual cycle and got a value of 0.31 mlU/mL. My cycle length is 40 days, and I had sex around the 15th, 17th, and 20th day of my menstrual cycle. I have had highly swollen breasts, and one day I had vomiting. I also experienced an eggy white type of discharge during the first morning urine on 26th day of my menstrual cycle. In addition, I have been experiencing dull cramps in my lower abdomen and am not getting a positive pregnancy test.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to what you have described, your menstrual cycle lasts 40 days which means that the day of ovulation is around the 26th day of your menstrual cycle. So the chances of you being pregnant are very less. The symptoms can be due to urinary or vaginal infection, and the breast tenderness is normal during ovulation. So I suggest getting a complete urine examination test to rule out infection and keep trying for pregnancy, as these are chances of pregnancy during these days.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

I am concerned about the line from my belly button to the vagina, and I have never seen this line previously. Also, I did not conceive this time. Can, you please guide me on how I can plan my pregnancy?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Natasha Bansal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

This line is usually present in pregnancy but can be present otherwise due to hormonal changes in the body. And this is nothing serious or anything you should be worried about. Breast tenderness can also be due to changes in hormones in the body and is basically due to water retention and is nothing serious. For how long have you been trying to conceive?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

I had just started planning for pregnancy, and this was my first month. Usually, before 10 to 14 days of my menses, I tend to gain around one kilogram weight, but this time I did not gain any weight. Sometimes my menstrual cycle lasts for 30 days. Is there any chance of getting a positive pregnancy result if my menses were scheduled on the 30th day of the menstrual cycle?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Natasha Bansal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You can continue trying for pregnancy; sometimes, it takes time to conceive. It is not necessary that in one cycle, you will conceive. However, if you have irregular cycles like 30 days or 40 days, do unprotected sexual intercourse every 3rd day.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

1. How long should I wait for pregnancy testing this month?

2. Is a blood test enough? As I consulted another doctor, she said to wait as it might be early to do a test.

3. There are various ovulation kits available on the market. Are they reliable?

4. Is there any chance of getting pregnant if the cycle lasts 40 days?

5. What are the other symptoms of the early months of pregnancy?

Can you please make it clear whether the body releases eggs on the 26th, 28th, and 30th days of the menstrual cycle and is it a good time to conceive?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Natasha Bansal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

1. You can wait till the 40th day and do the urine pregnancy test if you do not get your periods. A blood test usually takes at least 8 to 10 days to come positive. So till then, keep trying and if you do not get your periods even on the 40th day, take a urine test.

2. You can use ovulation kits available on the market and plan sexual intercourse accordingly. They help to detect the time of ovulation and can guide you regarding the timing of the trial. For example, you can try three days before and three days after ovulation, as the chances of pregnancy are high during those days.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response.

The brown region around my nipples is expanding on my right side boob. Is there anything to worry about? Although the expansion is not very significant, it is noticeable. Also, say if I am pregnant, does having intercourse harm the fetus?

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Natasha Bansal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

In pregnancy, the areola enlarges and expands for both breasts, but not so early. So this can be the sign but again not confirmatory of pregnancy. You can try conceiving till the start of the next menstrual cycle; after that, it is not advisable to have intercourse during the first months of pregnancy.

Thank you.
