Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I wanted to know if one could get pregnant a week before periods. I tried to have sex with my boyfriend, but I refused because it was hurting me. His penis did not penetrate inside me. In the attempt of putting his penis into the vagina, I gave up. And all this was unprotected. Please tell me what I should do.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your query and concern.

For ladies ovulation occurs around the 12 to 16th day of the period. The life of the egg is 24 hours, and that of the sperm is 72 hours, so as per this calculation, there is no chance of the egg being alive till one week before the period, and the sperm will not stay alive till the next ovulation. This puts you at a very low risk of pregnancy. Hopefully, you are sure of the period's date. Semen itself is not needed for pregnancy, even the precum or pre-seminal fluid, which is the clear fluid that is released from the penis before semen (it is rich in young and healthy sperms) even if it falls on the thighs or the genitals, the sperms can swim up the vagina and reach the egg, to form a pregnancy. But as the sexual exposure was so close to periods, there is no chance of pregnancy. If you are not sure of the period's date and if your sex was within the last 72 hours. I would then suggest you take an emergency contraceptive pill like tablet I-pill (Levonorgestrel) or Unwanted-72 (Levonorgestrel) as soon as possible. You will get your period within seven to ten days.

Hope I have clarified your queries.
