Could pregnancy happen despite having a period after sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend missed her period this month. She had sex two weeks before her last period, and her cycles are usually 32 to 37 days long.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern and will definitely help you with it.

See, for getting pregnant, the sperm have to be ejaculated inside the vagina of the female. These sperms then need to fertilize an egg, which should then be implanted in the uterus of the female. When all this happens successfully, then the female is said to have conceived or be pregnant.

In your case you are saying that she had intercourse two weeks before, and then she had a period. If that be the case, then she had a period post-intercourse, and hence there is a very rare chance of pregnancy.

If you wanted to write that intercourse was two weeks after the period, then please tell me if it was unprotected or protected intercourse, as around that time your friend must have been ovulating, and hence the egg was available, and there was a high chance of pregnancy.

In both cases, please do a urine pregnancy test with the first urine of the day for an accurate result. Do not drink too much fluid prior to the test. Adhere to all guidelines written on the package of the pregnancy test kit.

I hope this is clear, and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Do follow up whenever needed.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
