Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had protected intercourse only two days after my period ended. Then, I took an emergency contraceptive pill just to be sure. After five days, I experienced menstrual bleeding. Is this normal? Is there any chance I could be pregnant? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

There is no probability of conception because after two days of periods, the egg was no longer available, you had used protection, you had an emergency tablet, and you were already bleeding. For women, ovulation normally happens between the twelfth and sixteenth day of their menstruation. An egg has a life of twenty-four hours, while sperm has a life of seventy-two hours. So, there was no likelihood that the egg would be ready for sperm, and sperm would not be available for the following ovulation.

The emergency tablets contain a large amount of progesterone hormone, which is produced in your body in the second half of the period following ovulation. This pill will suddenly thicken the inner lining of the uterus, making it unsuitable for a probable pregnancy to occur. Because it is a single dose, it has no strength to stand on, so it comes off, and you get a period or bleeding of greater thickness within 7 to 10 days. It is a highly effective approach, although it disrupts hormonal balance and menstruation. So, I suggest trying alternative approaches first and just utilizing E-Pill (Levonorgestrel) as a last resort.

I hope this information will help you.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is it usual to experience bleeding after using an emergency contraception pill? If so, for how many days may it continue? My period is due for next month. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

As previously mentioned, the I Pill causes a dramatic rise in the thickness of the uterine inner lining. Because it is a single dose, it will not last long, so thick layers of the uterus will fall out or bleed 7 to 10 days after taking the emergency pill. This will last for approximately three to six days or less. The next menstruation will be one month after this bleeding. As a result, the following periods will be delayed to this day.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

So, should I expect the bleeding to continue, just like it does with my normal period? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Balakrishnan R

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, the bleeding will be similar to typical periods, with heavier and darker blood and lower abdominal pain. It may last three to six days, similar to a period. You will mostly receive the next period one month from now.

If you have heavy bleeding, pain, or need to stop bleeding quickly, take a tablet Trapic-Mf, tablet Tranostat-M and tablet Pause-Mf . All the above mentioned drugs contain Tranexamic acid and Mefanamic acid. This is not a hormone and can be taken two to four times a day depending on the amount of bleeding or pain you experience. It has no adverse effects.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

It has been a week since my last bleeding, and my period is still due. Could you kindly recommend a medication to trigger my period? I am very concerned right now. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Relax; there is no chance of pregnancy because you have already checked it out. I have already informed you that your next menstruation will be disrupted.

To have periods, I suggest using any of the oral birth control pills, such as tablet Novelon (combination of Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol), tablet Ovral-G (Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel), tablet Dear 21 (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol), tablet Duoluton-L (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol), or tablet Intimacy Plus 3 (Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) - one tablet twice daily for ten days (throw away the 21st pill). No matter the cause, you will have periods within seven to ten days. To regulate your hormones and periods, take the same medications, one tablet at night, for twenty-one days beginning the day you start bleeding. If you want to use it as a contraceptive, you can do so in cycles or just stop after one packet.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
