What are the chances of pregnancy in a woman who had non-penetrative sex and took an I-pill within 48 hours of sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female. I had sex, but no vaginal penetration occured, and my last period was ten days before. I am a virgin, and this is my first time taking I-pill and having sex. I took I-pill within 48 hours of sexual intercourse. I have a cycle of approximately 28 days, and the flow is medium. Please help. Can I be pregnant?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

As there was no deposition of spermatozoa and as you have taken an emergency contraceptive pill within 48 hours, the possibility of pregnancy is less. By taking an emergency contraceptive pill within 48 hours, you can expect around 75 % of protection. As you are having 28 days cycle, ovulation usually occurs around the 14th day of the cycle and may not be on the 10th day. By taking all these points into consideration, the possibility of pregnancy is less. But to be sure, if you miss your expected period date, I suggest it is better to go for a urine pregnancy test once to rule out the possibility of pregnancy.

Hope this has cleared your query.

Take care.
