Is it safe to take Sysron to stop prolonged period?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am on my period for one month. I consulted a doctor who suggested me to take Traptic for three days, yet the flow did not stop. Then, she gave me another tablet Sysron for 20 days. Is it safe to take? I am a married woman.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First get an ultrasound gynecology done to know the endometrial thickness. If it is less than 5 to 6 mm, then this medicine, Sysron (Norethisterone), will not stop the bleeding; instead, you need to take a combination of oral contraceptive pills to stabilize the lining. If the lining is quite thick, then tablet Sysron will work. Also, get your thyroid profile, serum prolactin, fasting blood sugar and fasting insulin, levels tested on an empty stomach.
