Can we verify prostate cancer with PSA levels?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had elevated PSA levels. I had also undergone an MRI and biopsy to confirm the prostate cancer. My PSA levels are coming down.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern. I suggest you did the right thing by performing all these tests. Active surveillance is advised in case of prostate cancer. However, follow-up should be timely, and intervention should be done if PSA rises on follow-up.

I hope this has helped you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

Earlier, I was thinking only PSA was sufficient to test for prostate cancer. But now I know it is important to carry out all the tests for active surveillance in case of prostate cancer.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If Gleason's score were high, then the action would be different. The decision on its treatment certainly depends on many factors, but the most important test is histology, so you did the right thing.

I hope this has helped you.
