Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

For around seven years, my blood protein levels range from 8 to 8.6. The average of all is 8.29 and nothing showed up in urine. Is this a precursor to something? When I asked doctors, they all said that it was in guidelines and it is intermittent.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

  • Yes, your doctor is right. Variation in protein levels is always present.
  • Only, if the globulin levels are too high, then it is worrisome. If the globulin levels are increasing over time, then you need to be worried. If not, then not to be concerned.
  • This range for total protein level is normal and not to be worried about.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I forgot to mention that only before six years, the gamma globulins were at 1.9 and it said no abnormal protein band detected. But, upon visual inspection of the electropherogram it revealed a moderate concentration monoclonal immunoglobulin migrating into the far gamma region. That was the only time and I checked like you said the globulin levels and they stayed within the guidelines. During that time, I looked on the internet and frightened of multiple myeloma.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

  • At your age, we do not suspect any myeloma usually.
  • If it is within normal range, then nothing to worry. Repeat tests after six months. If the results are the same, then no need to worry.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I am assuming you read all the details and you feel it should be just watched. This has been the case for the past 10 years. Does this show any precursor to something or is it just my baseline?

Answered by Dr. Prakash. H. M.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • No, it is not a precursor of any lesion. As it is there for more than 8 years, it cannot be so long.
  • However, whenever we have seen, usually more than gamma globulins protein increase, other RBC (red blood cells), WBC (white blood cells) and platelet parameters reduce first.
  • Bone pains at this age cannot be easily thought of as a symptom and can be safely disregarded.
  • To reduce the anxiety, repeat test after six months. At present, there is nothing to be worried about.
