Which is the best treatment option for protruding upper jaw?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 9-year-old and in his upper jaw, three of the teeth are protruding outside his mouth. I have met a few orthodontists, some suggest going from headgear first and then braces whereas others suggest going with braces directly. I need help understanding which one will be the best. unable to understand if his upper jaw or teeth need to be pulled back first. His upper jaw is in a V-shape instead. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have gone through your query and OPG (orthopantomogram). Since the patient is of growing age and has permanent teeth, especially canines not fully erupted so it is always better to go for growth modulation therapy first. As to utilize whatever growth is remaining for bone modulation. Dental changes that are orthodontic correction can be achieved later after growth modulation. Then also clinical examination and extra oral n intraoral photographs are mandatory for such cases. You can get back to further doubts.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Which option do you recommend for the first line of treatment? Braces or headgear?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com

After clinical examination, if headgear is required then there will be two-phase therapy. First growth modulation will include headgear, and second orthodontic treatment will include correction of teeth alignment and occlusion. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
