What could be the reason of vaginal sensitivity and dark spots after shaving?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been shaving since I was 14 years old. At first, shaving was not a problem for me. Everything was fine no dark spots or any signs of hyperpigmentation. But as time passed, the more I shaved, the more sensitive it became down there. I researched home remedies to bleach my vagina naturally, but it also said I should see a dermatologist if it was severe. Please get back to me with more information about my condition. I will not mind sending pictures for the best solution to my problem.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You might be suffering from folliculitis barbae and pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Please take the following measures.

  1. Ensure the skin is well moisturized. Use a lotion containing glycolic acid on the affected areas. This exfoliates the surface skin cells and reduces the likelihood of new inflamed spots.
  2. Cleanse the skin using a polyester skin-cleansing pad or a moisturizing shaving foam.
  3. Aim to have a five-o'clock shadow immediately after shaving. Shave less frequently (not every other day).
  4. Either use a single-blade disposable razor or use electric hair clippers or a razor with an attachment that leaves the cut hairs long.
  5. Shave in the direction of the follicle, not against it. Do not stretch the skin.
  6. Sterilize metal hair clippers and electric razors using boiling water. Plastic items should be soaked in an antiseptic solution.

Thank you.
