Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 43-year-old female. I have pain in my joints along with morning stiffness, rheumatoid nodules, fatigue, and fever. I consulted my general practitioner and learned about rheumatoid arthritis. May I know how this condition is usually caused? How can we diagnose this condition and manage it effectively? Can taking DMARDS alone help?
Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling, morning stiffness, fatigue, and nodules. The exact cause is unclear, but genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors play a role. Diagnosis includes:
Medical history and physical examination of the joints involved.
Blood tests: RA (rheumatoid factor), anti-CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide), CRP (C-reactive protein), ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate).
Imaging: X-rays and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to assess joint damage.
Management:
Painkillers can be taken to decrease the pain and to take care of inflammation.
DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) (as you mentioned) will slow down the disease progression.
Biologics may be added if DMARDs alone are not enough, which will be provided by your doctor only.
Regular exercise and physical activity should be incorporated into your daily routine.
Consume a balanced and nutritious diet.
Limb physiotherapy might help in pain management.
DMARDs are essential, but it is often combined with other treatments for better control. This treatment is effective only when combined with other medicines for better control of pain and inflammation.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Thank you.
