Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 45-year-old mother has been battling rheumatoid arthritis for several years now, and I can see how much it is affecting her life. Her joints are constantly swollen and painful, especially in her hands, and it is hard for her to do the things she used to love, like gardening and cooking.
The flare-ups seem to come out of nowhere, and some days she can barely move. The medications help, but they also come with side effects that leave her feeling tired and weak. Is there a better way to manage her condition? I just want her to have some relief and to be able to enjoy life without so much pain. Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Rheumatoid arthritis (a chronic autoimmune disease that mostly affects joints) has a progressive course left untreated. One can suffer severe swelling of joints, persistent pain, and later on difficulty in performing simple tasks of independent living.
You need to ask your doctor about biologics that are now available and more effective in improving long-term outcomes than anti-inflammatory tablets used alone.
Please check with your rheumatologist (specialist in inflammatory diseases) about biologic drugs, as these are more effective in controlling symptoms and improving outcomes. However, it is important to remember that these drugs are not a cure.
To stay productive, you need to do a regular range of movements and exercises that include gentle stretches, deep breathing exercises, yoga, etc. to stay flexible.
Remember that the outcomes of treatment are still not guaranteed, but with the biological medications and regular exercises, you can stay active and independent.
Kindly consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
Regards.
