Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a noticeable scar from a childhood injury, and it is affecting my self-esteem. Are there any non-invasive treatments or cosmetic procedures available to improve the appearance of older scars? Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the details provided from your end and I do understand your concern.

Yes, injury scars can be treated with laser procedures. There are several laser procedures including carbon dioxide lasers, erbium lasers, and q-switch lasers which are available to help reduce the intensity of scars. Since it is a chronic scar, they may take a few sessions to reduce in intensity. Depending on the depth and surface area and area affected, you may need up to six sessions which are done once in three to four weeks. Following lasers, your doctor will also provide you with scar creams to help reduce the appearance of the scars. The procedure will act like a prepping maneuver to help with the penetration of the gels and creams to have faster results. Lasers have no side effects and work wonders. They are meant for skin and will not cause any adverse effects. Depending on the depth and chronicity of the scar, they can even be removed completely. Kindly make sure to consult a doctor who is an expert in lasers and a clinic where they mostly do laser procedures only.

Apart from the same, there are other procedures like PRP with micro-needling or micro-needling alone which may also help to an extent. However, they do not help with the complete removal of scars. Usually, these methods are done using pen-like equipment that has small needles of 0.5 to 1.5 mm in size which are used by gliding on the skin surface and PRP (which is platelet-rich plasma taken from your blood sample which acts as a growth factor stimulating collagen production to help with improving the scar), is applied on the area where the micro-needling is done. This procedure is done once a month for six sessions. Laser would be the best choice in my opinion.

I hope this helps you. Thank you.
