Can a 27-year-old with schizophrenia have a healthy baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 27-year-old woman diagnosed with schizophrenia three years ago. My symptoms are under control with medications, but I am planning to get married soon and am scared about how this illness could affect pregnancy and parenting. Are antipsychotic medications safe if I get pregnant? Will my condition worsen after childbirth? I have heard about postpartum psychosis, and I am worried that it could happen to me. My psychiatrist mentioned involving a gynecologist early on. Can you explain all this in simple terms? I just want to know if it is possible to have a healthy baby and a stable life.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concerns. You can have and enjoy a family life as you desire with adequate planning and good support during pregnancy and after delivery, as there are medications that help manage schizophrenia, and are also safe in pregnancy. Also, you are closely followed during pregnancy, and your medications are adjusted as required. This will ensure that you and your baby will be safe. It would also prevent your condition from worsening. Pregnancy is a stressful period both physically and mentally, but with good care, its effects would not have a significant impact on the control of schizophrenia.

You would need to attend a pre-conception clinic, as this would be discussed further with you in such a clinic. A fetomaternal specialist clinic is most appropriate for you.

Thank you.
