Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am struggling with significant side effects from my schizophrenia medication. Despite taking Risperidone as prescribed, I have experienced rapid weight gain of about 40 pounds in three months, and tremors that are now interfering with daily tasks like texting. My symptoms also do not feel fully controlled, as the voices have been getting louder, and I am still feeling very fearful at night.
My psychiatrist encouraged me to continue the medication, but I am feeling sedated during the day and increasingly distressed. I am wondering whether there are alternative treatments that may help manage my symptoms without causing such intense side effects. I have tried stopping my medication in the past, but unfortunately, that led to hospitalizations.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for reaching out and for being so open about what you are experiencing. I know these challenges can be incredibly overwhelming, and I want you to know that you are not facing them alone. Many people living with schizophrenia encounter similar difficulties with medications, especially when it comes to weight changes, tremors, or feeling emotionally "flattened."
That takes real strength to know and want to continue treatment, especially after previous hospitalizations. It will also make complete sense that you are concerned about the side effects you are experiencing. If a medication is not well-tolerated or does not fully manage symptoms, it is completely reasonable to discuss the use of an alternative with your psychiatrist.
There are other options available that people find easier to manage, and a clinician might help you explore whether another drug, a dose adjustment, or additional support might be better for you. It may also be beneficial to see a psychiatrist who listens attentively to your concerns and works with you to devise a plan of care that will address both your emotional and physical needs.
It is always okay to seek a second opinion if you feel that your needs are not being met. Complementing medication, many individuals also benefit from therapies, routines, and peer support, which can help with the management of distress and the development of confidence in daily life. You are taking important steps by reaching out and asking for help. If this message brings you any clarity or comfort, I am glad to support you. Feel free to reach out whenever you need.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
