Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have an old prescription from my doctor, which I have not renewed yet. I have 5 mg Levocetirizine (Xyzall) and Singulair (Montelukast) 5 mg. My question is whether the 5 mg is the correct dosage for an adult regarding seasonal allergies, as my pharmacist has told me that this is a child's dosage. I also have a feeling of tightness in the throat, which seems to have come along with the start of the allergy season here, and I have the feeling of excessive mucus production, leading me to swallow quite often. I feel it is getting better with Singulair 5 mg, but I have not been taking the medication long enough this year. I only take this medication during the pollen grass season. Do you think this tight-throat feeling could be related to my seasonal allergies or anxiety and stress?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Seasonal hay fever allergies can cause tightness of the throat and sometimes even the chest. The correct dosage of montelukast sodium is 10 mg for an adult. The correct dosage of Levocetirizine hydrochloride is 5 mg for an adult. The dosage of plain cetirizine for an adult is 10 mg and can be given twice daily for optimum relief.

If you are taking levocetirizine 5 mg once daily and still not finding optimum relief, I suggest adding another antihistaminic (a different compound) like Desloratadine 10 mg once daily Fexofenadine 120 mg once daily at a 12-hour gap with Levocetirizine.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your response. I recently learned from a brochure that Montelukast has a high risk of upper respiratory tract infections.

Would you still recommend this medication?

Hello doctor,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The drug Montelukast is very effective in countering lower airway hypersensitivities. It is helpful in asthma and hyperreactive airway diseases.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
