Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery a few days back.I have been having a continuous fever since the next day. My fever ranges from 99 to 100 degrees F when taking Tylenol every six to eight hours. If I do not take Tylenol my fever ranges between 100 to 101 degrees F. Please advise. I am concerned. Thank you.

HI,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Usually, we do not see any fever in patients post-septoplasty with turbinate reduction. I hope you have been given adequate nasal washes and a good nasal suction clearance post-surgery both of which are essential for all patients. I would suggest you undergo a nasal endoscopy and then we can proceed as per what has to be done next. Antibiotics are given to all patients for seven to ten days depending on institutional protocols. I hope I have been of help. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply. It was very helpful. Along with the fever, I also have had swelling on the left cheek and below the eyes for the last four days. I have a few follow-up questions. 1. What is the effect of continuous fever for 4-5 days? 2. Is it okay to keep taking Tylenol for so long? 3. My ENT doctor is only available after two days to perform nasal endoscopy. Is it advisable to wait till then or get admitted to the ER now? I was advised to sleep with my head at an elevated level for the first couple of days after surgery. On the fourth day, I slept for about three to four hours horizontally on the bed. This caused a significant swelling of my left cheek. Not sure if that is expected or if it is of concern, and what can be done about it. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As I have mentioned earlier, we usually do not encounter any sort of fever or swelling, unless there is an infection. The most common cause of high-grade recurrent fever is due to infection which is quite common to occur if appropriate nasal wash and antibiotics have not been given or taken. I would suggest you visit your ENT (ear nose throat) specialist for a repeat nasal endoscopy to check for the possible infection causing fever and swelling around the eye. With good antibiotics, it should definitely resolve in time. A 30-degree upward head elevation is advised for all patients post-surgery for 48 hours. If you have slept in a horizontal posture after 48 hours, it has nothing to do with the symptoms in concern. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
