Can mouth scars spread infection during oral sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 22 years old. Yesterday, I had a sexual encounter with a girl, and during oral sex, I noticed scars inside her mouth.

When I asked, she mentioned it was a deficiency of vitamin B complex. I am feeling a bit scared. Can I get infected through oral sex?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is great that you are concerned about your health and seeking accurate information. Oral sex carries a negligible to low risk of HIV transmission, especially if there are no active bleeding, fresh sores, or bleeding gums involved. However, under these circumstances, there is a potential risk for transmitting other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

I recommend getting tested for HIV at baseline, one month after the last exposure, and then at three months. Additionally, I suggest getting tested for other STIs as well. Consistently and correctly using condoms is an effective prevention strategy for not only HIV but also other STIs.

I hope this addresses your concerns, but please feel free to ask or call anytime if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
