How can shoulder pain caused by an injury be relieved?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

About two weeks ago, I hurt my shoulder. Since then, I have had a very intense burning sensation at the base of my neck and the top of my shoulder. I went to the ER (emergency room) twice, and an orthopedic doctor ordered an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The pain is so intense.

I can barely move; my hand is swollen and feels like it is partially asleep, and the pain is radiating up to my neck and down my back. Motrin is no longer working, and I have started to get dizzy from the pain.

What can be done before my MRI to ease this pain?

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

This pain seems to be cervical spine pain radiating down to your arms. You need to take some general precautions and medicines. The probable diagnosis is cervical spondylosis with upper limb radiculopathy. This condition is treated by taking rest and medicines.

Instructions to reduce neck pain

  1. Avoid lifting heavy weights.

  2. Avoid arching your back. Instead, bend your knees to pick up something from the floor.

  3. Avoid sitting for long hours.

  4. Avoid two-wheeler rides.

  5. Improve your posture while sitting. Try to sit up with your back straight.

  6. Try getting up from your chair every 20 minutes and taking a quick walk around; then, continue working. Always sit on a chair with back support.

  7. Do not suddenly get up from a sleeping position. Instead, turn to the side and then get up.

  8. Take bed rest when you have severe pain.

  9. Do hot fomentations locally over the affected area at least twice daily.

  10. Apply Voveran gel locally twice daily.

  11. Take tablet of Pregabalin 75 mg at night for 15 days before food at 7 pm every day, one tablet of Ibuprofen 400 mg in the morning and at night for ten days after food, and one tablet of Rabeprazole 20 mg in the morning and at night for ten days before food, one tablet of Shelcal 500 mg for 30 days before food, and one tablet of D-shine 60K once daily for ten days and then once a month for 11 months.

  12. Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them. Do not take these tablets if you are a known case of bronchial asthma.

  13. Jogging, running, and weightlifting may aggravate neck and back problems.

  14. You need to start taking Pregabalin tablets in addition to the tablet that you are taking to relieve the pain.

Have a follow-up with the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan report.

I hope this answers your query.

Let me know if I need to assist you further.

Thank you.
