Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19-years-old and had protected sex for the first time on the day after my period ended. My boyfriend doubted that some of the semen escaped through the base of the condom. But he rechecked the condom, and no punctures or holes were present. I took an Ipill after 48 hours and before 72 hours of having sex. I have PCOS as well, which sometimes leads to irregular periods. And a day later, I had leg cramps but no periods yet. Am I pregnant?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

To get pregnant, the sperm must be released inside the vagina of the female. These sperm are then required to fertilize an egg which may or may not be available depending upon the ovulation pattern of the female. Further, the fertilized egg must be implanted in the female's uterus. When all this happens successfully, a female is said to be pregnant.

In your case, since it was protected intercourse and you checked the condom for holes, the likelihood of sperm getting released is negligible. Further, rarely a female has eggs within one to four days of the period, so there is no possibility again. Emergency contraceptive pills are hormone-based, leading to bleeding in certain females, as you have experienced, so do not worry about that.

Most likely, you are not pregnant, but to be sure, you may do a urine pregnancy test at home with the first urine of the day or a blood HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I did the pregnancy test using apollo pregnancy test kit for both afternoon and morning samples and both were negative. Still I have not got my period.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Since you have already tested negative for a home pregnancy test, so my opinion is that PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) coupled with stress is the likely reason for your delayed period.

Please share the pregnancy test kit picture if you have clicked. Also, I request you to tell me the longest delay period you have ever encountered with PCOS.

Let us wait for a week more, and we can do a urine test or blood HCG test again so that I can prescribe the correct medicine for periods. My only worry is that it should not happen that there is the slightest chance of pregnancy and you take medicines for the period. It will complicate the pregnancy situation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
