Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had waxing done ten days ago and I got a red rash on my genitals. What is this? I am worried about herpes, but it does not hurt and itch.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I read your query and can understand your concern. The bump looks like "folliculitis," which forms after a wax. Waxing pulls hair off the base, irritating the skin and creating bumps around the hair follicle. In herpes, there will be fluid-filled blisters in groups, and the skin's surface will look red. As per the picture (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), this one does not look like herpes. An initial episode of herpes will be painful, and sometimes there will be burning. I suggest you apply (consult your specialist doctor, discuss with the and take take the medicines under their consent), Clindamycin 1 % gel, twice a day for one week.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

There was no hair in the area; it was just a pore. Can I still get a skin rash?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. Though there was no visible hair, hair follicles were distributed at the base. I can see a few hairs around the bump that look irritated at the bottom (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). Since you had this rash soon after waxing, the most likely diagnosis is folliculitis. If it does not get better with Clindamycin in one week, or if it appears again, get the swabbing done. A wound swab will test for bacteria and viruses (herpes). As I mentioned earlier, herpes rash is seen in groups or clusters and is painful. At present, it does not look like herpes.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
