Can face mask cause skin rashes on face?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have rashes around my cheeks in the area where I wear the mask, and it has been there for three to four days now. They are not red and do not itch, but I have never had rashes on my skin before. I believe it is due to the mask.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

These rashes could be frictional dermatitis or acne. I need to see these rashes before I can suggest the cause and treatment. Revert with a photo so I can recommend treatment accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have attached a photo too. I do not usually get acne problems on my skin, and it is very rare.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I have seen the photo (attachment removed to protect patient identity). Yes, these are acne only. Due to mask, skin pores get clogged by oil or makeup or dirt and cause pimples. You have developed whiteheads known as comedones due to this. Apply Benzoyl peroxide 2.5 percent gel daily at night in a minimal quantity for three weeks. Use a mild cleanser like Cetaphil for oily skin to wash your face before wearing a mask and after the removing mask. Also, do not rub your face harshly while washing. Do not wash your face too frequently. And use a good antiacne non-greasy moisturizer on the face. Do not worry, this treatment will help and your acne will resolve.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
