Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a skin tag on my throat. What do you think it is? Kindly help.

Answered by Dr. Mehak Agarwal

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

In the picture you uploaded (attachment removed to protect patient identity), we can make out one side tonsil and a small papilla just in front of it attached to the anterior pillar. Did you mean the small papillomatous tag? It is harmless. It could be a local inflammatory growth of the mucosa. We need to worry only if there is any pain, bleeding, burning sensation over it or it starts to grow. To be safe and to be more decisive in our diagnosis. I would ideally prefer seeing both side tonsils and the back of the throat in a single picture. Please also tell us whether you suffer from any medical condition like diabetes or blood pressure. Do you smoke? But with the info you have given, the tag appears harmless. So nothing to worry about.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

So the papilla is fine. I have blood pressure and diabetes. I just wanted to make sure it was not HPV or something.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is not HPV (human papillomavirus) cancer. It is not a wart either. So there is no need to worry or excise it. The only way we can say conclusively whether it is HPV or not is by removing it and sending for histopathological examination. In our practice, we come across many such harmless lesions. They regress in a few weeks or months time. If any warning sings or symptoms develop, we can go for the biopsy. Use safe sexual practices nevertheless. Drink plenty of water and take multivitamins. Keep your sugars and blood pressure under control.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
