Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I started taking a new medication, Hydroxychloroquine. Tonight, I took a different sleeping pill, Hydroxyzine. Could I be having an allergic reaction to one of these two medications? I am not feeling quite right; my crotch area feels warm on and off.
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Thanks for sharing the details. It is good that you are paying attention to how you are feeling after starting the new medication, especially since you have had reactions to medications before. You mentioned that you began taking Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), and tonight you took a different sleeping pill, Hydroxyzine (Vistaril or Atarax).
Hydroxychloroquine is typically used for conditions like autoimmune diseases or malaria prevention, and it can cause side effects, though they tend to be more common with long-term use. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine and sedative often used for anxiety, nausea, and sleep issues. It can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and sometimes skin flushing or warmth.
There are a few possible causes for your symptoms. In terms of medication interaction, although there is no common severe interaction between Hydroxychloroquine and Hydroxyzine, both can affect nervous system functions. Hydroxyzine, being a sedative, might also increase the sedative effects of other medications, potentially making you feel off.
Regarding an allergic reaction, the warming sensation in your crotch area and diarrhea could be signs of an allergic response to either medication, though allergic reactions are often present with itching, swelling, or a rash. Diarrhea is also a known side effect of both medications, but is not necessarily an allergic reaction.
Additionally, overlapping side effects might be contributing to how you are feeling. Hydroxychloroquine can cause side effects like nausea, stomach discomfort, or even mild diarrhea, especially when you are just starting it. Hydroxyzine can cause flushing (warmth) or drowsiness, which may also contribute to your symptoms.
As for the next steps, monitor your symptoms closely. If the warming sensation and diarrhea persist or worsen, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider promptly. If you notice any swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe discomfort, seek medical attention immediately, as these can be signs of a more serious allergic reaction.
In the meantime, stay hydrated to replace fluids lost from diarrhea, rest, and avoid any additional sedatives or alcohol that may exacerbate the side effects. It is a good idea to contact your doctor to discuss your symptoms, especially since you have had previous issues with medication reactions.
If you are not experiencing severe symptoms (like swelling of the face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing), it is likely not an emergency but still something to monitor. Your doctor may adjust your medications or suggest alternatives. Would you like help writing a note to your doctor or advice on how to describe these symptoms when you speak with them?
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
