Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a female of 33 years old, rather healthy and doing fine otherwise. Is all the hype they make about chicken soup real when it comes to treating flu and cold? Is it some old mamma’s tale or is there some real science behind it? I have always been curious to know, as the climate has been erratic at our place lately and I am under the weather literally every week. Please give me some advice.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Chicken soup is really good for the body when someone has a cough or cold.
It has long been a popular home remedy for flu and cold symptoms, and there might be some scientific basis for its effectiveness. While it may not be a cure, chicken soup can provide certain benefits when you are feeling unwell:
Hydration: Chicken soup contains fluids that can help keep you hydrated, which is important when dealing with flu or cold symptoms.
Comfort and soothing: The warm broth can help soothe a sore throat and provide temporary relief from congestion.
Nutritional support: Chicken soup often contains vegetables, chicken, and sometimes whole grains, providing essential nutrients that can support your immune system.
Additionally, the steam from the soup might help loosen mucus and clear nasal passages temporarily.
To prevent frequent illness, consider other measures like practicing good hand hygiene, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and considering a flu vaccine.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach me again in case of further queries.
Thank you.
