Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What is the difference between spine fusion and fixation surgery?

Answered by Dr. Anuj Gupta

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The spine fusion means we fuse one mobile segment of the spine. That means we fuse between two vertebral bodies. We put bone graft there and it fuses with time. This is usually done if there is instability at that segment or spinal canal is so narrow that while decompression we are sure that this segment will become unstable. We also put screws because it takes around six months to fuse, till that time those screws will prevent instability at that segment. In spinal fixation surgery, we only put screws and connect them with rods. This is done mainly in trauma cases where natural healing occurs with time and till that time screws are kept in place. I could help you much better if you can tell me your particular case in brief.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
