Are negative STD tests after 9 months conclusive?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I did STD tests after exposure to HSV tests for three, six, and eight months by the rapid method and in the ninth month by the ELISA method, which came back negative. I also did an HIV by 4th gen combo CMIA test, which came negative.

Please suggest my status, disease-wise? Do I need more tests? How reliable are my tests, method, and labs?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern. The answers to your queries are:

  1. All tests for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) screening, as per the attached information, are negative. Hepatitis B and C are also negative. You were also screened for syphilis infection by VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory test), which is again negative at three months of exposure.
  2. The majority of the people (99.9 percent) who are infected with either HIV or Hepatitis B or C develop antibodies by three months and show a positive result. There are very rare cases of late seroconversion also reported at six months. The average period for syphilis is three to six weeks. You have been tested for these infections on an average of up to nine months; you do not require any other test for screening of these infections.
  3. The test kits used these days are highly sensitive to HIV, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and syphilis, and you do not require any further tests for these infections if there has been no other exposure after that.

I hope this answers your questions, but if you still have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
