How to overcome imaginary thoughts and self-talk?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old girl, and since I was young, I would lock myself in a room anytime I felt like I needed to detach from reality. I would turn music on and talk to imaginary things, pretending I was in a different place, which I think is normal for a kid, but for me, it never stopped. It has been years now, and I probably do this once daily, and they are not even imaginary people. They are the people I know and live with. I imagine saying things to them and acting them out, and it makes me feel good. I never talked to anyone about this. Lately, I catch myself talking to myself out loud, but since I am always aware of what I am doing, I thought I should not be concerned since it relaxes me. But I am scared now, and I might need help. I just wanted to tell someone and get an opinion once, as I never spoke of this before. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

You are talking with imaginary things. Lots of people grow with their virtual worlds and fantasies. These things are completely normal. If you think these intrusive thoughts are affecting your life, I suggest you visit a nearby psychiatrist for counseling and medications as it is a part of OCD (obstructive compulsive disorder). You will be able to overcome this virtual world in a couple of weeks.

I hope this helps you.

Regards.
