What does the white mark on the tooth suggest?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter has a strange mark on her tooth; she went to the dentist two weeks ago and was given a clean bill of health. However, I noticed this white mark in the past couple of days.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query. Are you talking about the front tooth? Does it look completely white? The picture (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) you enclosed is slightly big and blurred. Did the dentist examine your daughter, or did any other procedure like filling or applying any preventive sealant? Is your daughter only two years of age?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

There was no dental work done. Sorry about the photo. That was the best I could get as she would not remain still for me to get a better picture

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If it was just an examination and you suddenly noticed it, it might be a white spot lesion in children. On the other hand, maybe it is just a coincidence that you went to the dentist and noticed the white mark now. Such white spot lesions may occur when the tooth is prone to dental caries. It might also occur when tooth enamel is demineralized slightly. So since your daughter is around two years old, she should use fluoridated toothpaste at least once a day in small quantities with a soft brush. Use the Fones technique of brushing her lower teeth, where you also observe the spot. What toothpaste are you using currently? Any more details about your daughter? Is she still feeding, or are you past the lactating phase? Is the child on bottled milk now? Let me know in detail so that I can instruct you accordingly.

Thank you.
