Is pain in the gums after a temporary crown normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a temporary crown put in last Tuesday. I am in a lot of pain. This morning, my dentist told me my gum beside that tooth had died and pulled away a little exposing bone, which is why I am in pain. He said there was nothing we could do. Is this true?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have gone through your query, but your chief complaint needs to be completed. So if you can answer a few of my questions, I will be more accurate in my diagnosis.

When your tooth got under the procedure of a root canal, was there any pain after that? When did your pain start, and what was the nature of the pain? Did the pain go away itself, or did you take analgesics for that?

I do not think that your pain may be because of high points and it can also be because of the gingival tissue that has led to the exposure of bone. If bone exposure is the problem, you will have to go for symptomatic treatment until it gets resolved. I will help you better if you attach some of the photographs of your tooth and the radiograph.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
