Is it safe to get pregnant with thalassemia minor?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old female. I have thalassemia minor. Is there any problem in the future relating to pregnancy and delivery? Or is it fine to be pregnant at this age with thalassemia minor?

I do not have any problem now. My hemoglobin level is between 10 and 11 g/dL.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A female with thalassemia minor can get pregnant and have a child with a normal genome without thalassemia, or there can be thalassemia minor in children. Thalassemia minor is not a major health disease, and you do not need to worry about it even though it is present in your future child.

But you need to rule out thalassemia minor in your husband. If your husband is a thalassemia minor, then the child can have a 25 percent chance of acquiring thalassemia major, which is dangerous. So kindly rule out the thalassemia status of your husband and let me know about that.

Kindly upload your report to guide you further.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Will there be any problem with the spleen after pregnancy or delivery? A doctor has told my future partner that there will be a spleen problem after delivery in a thalassemic minor female, and complications may occur during pregnancy. So he is breaking the relationship.

Please guide me about it.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Following is my opinion on your asked questions.

There will not be any problem in the spleen after delivery due to thalassemia minor. So it is a false belief, in my opinion. If you have thalassemia major, then it can be complicated, but not in thalassemia minor. The hemoglobin level above 10 g/dL can be enough for normal delivery.

However, I strongly suggest that your future partner needs to investigate for thalassemia. If he has thalassemia minor, then do not marry, or else there is no need to worry.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
