Does a tight foreskin during erection affect sexual life?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

During an erection, my penis foreskin does not retract. Will this affect penetrative sex? Should the foreskin retract to make the head of the penis visible for proper penetration?

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Many men can engage in intercourse even with a tight foreskin, as I have observed in numerous patients at my clinic. If the foreskin cannot retract during an erection but can when flaccid, this may indicate a tight frenum or frenulum.

The frenum, or frenulum, is the connector of skin that attaches the foreskin to the head of the penis. While some men can still have penetrative sex despite this issue, it is generally beneficial for the foreskin to retract enough to expose the head of the penis for proper penetration.

If the foreskin cannot be retracted in a flaccid state, this condition is referred to as phimosis, which typically requires treatment through a minor surgical procedure. This procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.

In some cases, applying Betnovate (Betamethasone) skin cream to the foreskin and gently pulling it back for several months can help. However, if the issue is due to a short frenulum, there is a risk that the skin could tear, leading to bleeding.

If bleeding occurs, apply pressure by placing your thumb on the bleeding site and using three fingers on the opposite side of the penis to compress it.

Maintain this pressure for five minutes or until the bleeding stops, then consult a doctor for further assistance.

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Should the penis foreskin should automatically retract during erection to make the head of the glands? If it does not happen automatically, what do we have to do during penetration?

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Usually, it opens automatically. But if it does not open automatically, then you can pull it back manually using some lubricant like petroleum jelly or coconut oil.

I hope this answers your query.

Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.
