Can a breastfeeding mother undergo wisdom tooth extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 31-year-old breastfeeding mother. I gave birth three and a half months back. Is it fine to go for wisdom tooth extraction as the painkillers are not working anymore to relieve the pain?

Kindly advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, you can proceed with tooth extraction and do mention to your dentist that you are nursing a child before the procedure. The general rule is to breastfeed your little one only after a minimum of three hours of post-medicine intake.

Feed your child just before the extraction appointment. You can save some breast milk in the refrigerator for post-extraction use (as you will have the anesthetic drug in your system after the procedure). The doctor may prescribe safe antibiotics and painkillers after the procedure for the next three days. Though they are proven safe, I advise you to feed your little one before taking medicines to be extra safe.

I hope this helps.

If there are further queries, I would be happy to help.

Thank you.
