Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a tooth extraction a week ago and had an abscess on the gum. I am not sure if the abscess was completely removed or if it is normal to look that way after a week. But I am afraid that the infection has spread because two days ago I had a headache and eye pain, and also my cheek is a little more swollen than the other.
The first picture (marked 1) is before the tooth extraction, and the second is after one week. I am taking Oxacillin for three days. I took Augmentin one week before the extraction.
Can you please help me with your suggestions on this? Is it normal to look like this when it is in the process of healing?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Swelling after extraction can happen, especially when the extraction was difficult or took a long period of time. In this case, seeing the image (the attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity), Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid) 1000 mg (milligrams) is better at controlling any infection (one tablet every 12 hours).
But if you feel pain that was not felt after extraction for three to four days, this could be a sign of a tooth socket infection. This requires a visit to your dentist to clean the infected wound and put inside the socket material, which promotes healing.
In my opinion, starting Augmentin 1000 mg is a must. If swelling is still present or pain is felt in the extraction site within two more days, further clinical examination with your dentist is a must.
If there is no more swelling or any pain in the extraction place after two days of Augmentin treatment, please continue your Augmentin course to the end, even if you do not feel any more problems, and there is no need to visit your dentist. Get well soon.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
