I would like to get tubal ligation reverse surgery. Is it safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had tubes tied for about seven years now and had a tummy tuck before four years. Now, I would like to get tubal ligation reverse surgery done. I was wondering is it safe to have the procedure done. Please explain.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • There is no problem in going for tubal recanalization. But as in any surgery, reversal of tubal integrity will not be 100%.
  • The tube may look open and normal, but once damaged by previous surgery, the inner lining of the tube will not be perfect. Just like a patchwork was done. It will never be as good as the original.
  • You can have it repaired, but there is a risk of tubal pregnancy. This can be recanalization through laparoscopy but will be a tough surgery.
  • If I may suggest, you can have IVF (in-vitro fertilization) or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). This does not need tubes at all.
  • The egg will be taken out of the body, and husband's sperm gets injected into the egg to form an embryo. This can be kept directly into the uterus. There is no risk with the damaged tube. This has no risk of the meticulous surgery needed for the tubal recanalization.
  • But if you are more interested in tubal recanalization, it can be done. All the best.
