Why does belly button look like a green mucusy substance?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had a baby girl for six days. Her umbilical cord fell off and I fear that it might be infected. It looks like a green mucusy substance sort of phlegm and a small drop of blood on her belly button. It dries up but if touched, the blood oozes again.

Hi,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

As the cord has fallen off, the area looks wet but there is nothing to worry about. It is called umbilical granuloma. Just use the ointment for five days and it will be fine.

However, if the discharge increases or the baby develops fever then a physical consultation is needed.

Thanks and regards.

Treatment plan

Mupirocin 2 % ointment apply locally twice a day for five days.
