Can pregnancy occur despite taking an emergency contraceptive pill within four hours of intercourse?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex on the eighth day of my menstrual cycle. My last period lasted for five days. After the incident, I took an emergency contraceptive pill three hours later, and in a panic I took another pill after four days after the sexual encounter. After 10 days of unprotected sex, I experienced bleeding for four days, which was lighter than my regular period. My menstrual cycle typically ranges from 32 to 45 days. One of the doctors on this online portal mentioned that there is a 10 percent chance of me being pregnant. I am under so much stress, please tell me if I can get pregnant three days after my period ends, especially with a menstrual cycle longer than 30 days. Are there any chances of pregnancy, and if so, how can I avoid this unwanted pregnancy? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to the timeline you mentioned there is a meager chance of you being pregnant (please note that no contraception method is 100 percent safe and so no one will be able to give you a 100 percent guarantee). Please do not take stress and do not take unnecessary medication as these medicines are hormones and can cause harm when taken too much. I would suggest you get a serum beta HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test done within 14 to 21 days after the day of intercourse. This blood test can detect even the slightest indication of pregnancy. A value of less than 2 rules out pregnancy.

I hope this helps you.

Regards.
