Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is it safe to have sex on the fourth, fifth, or sixth day of menses? I am just being cautious as I do not want my partner to face any problems in the future.

Hello,

Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide expert opinions on your medical issues.

To understand the safe days, ovulation day has to be calculated. Ovulation day is determined based on the duration of the periods. For a woman with 28 days cycle, ovulation will be on the 14th day, that is 14 days before her period. So if your partner has a regular cycle of 30 days, ovulation will be on the 16th day. The first day of bleeding is the day one of the cycle. Now if the cycle is irregular, the calculation will be as follows. The longest cycle minus eight and the shortest cycle minus 11 is the duration of ovulation. For example, if the longest cycle is 34 days and the shortest cycle is 27 days, then the calculation will be as follows: 34-8 = 26, 27-11 = 16. So the ovulation will be between 16th and 26th day. The life of an egg is 24 hours and that of a sperm is 72 hours. So now you will have to calculate the date of ovulation. Also, calculate how long the egg and sperm will be alive and active. You can have sex based on this calculation.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
