I am on Actemra for uveitis. Can it cause weight gain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old female, 68 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds. I received a single infusion of Actemra (Tocilizumab) for uveitis and am currently also on Methotrexate and Zepbound (Tirzepatide). So my questions are -

  • How long does it typically take for Actemra to be eliminated from the body after one infusion?

  • I have been experiencing weight gain and want to know if it could be related.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your age, weight (165 pounds at 5 feet 8 inches), and the fact that you received a single infusion of Actemra (Tocilizumab), the drug typically has a half-life of about 11 to 13 days.

It generally takes about five to six half-lives for a medication to be cleared from the body, meaning Actemra may remain in your system for roughly two to three months after one infusion. The exact duration can vary depending on the dose given and your metabolism.

Since you are also on Methotrexate (which can enhance immunosuppressive effects) and Zepbound (Tirzepatide) for weight management, there are some important considerations.

While Actemra is not commonly linked to significant weight gain, its effects on inflammation and metabolism, combined with other systemic therapies, could contribute to fluid retention or weight changes.

Tracking your symptoms and discussing them with your rheumatologist or prescribing specialist will help ensure the best treatment balance.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
