My vagina is swollen, and it is very itchy. Is it due to a yeast infection or masturbation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 18 years old with a weight of 127 lbs and a height of 5.1 feet. I am questioning to know whether I have a yeast infection because I have some symptoms such as the red, swollen vagina, clumpy discharge, severe itchiness, and burning while peeing. I am having these symptoms for a few days now. I do not know whether this is important. But I masturbated right before this started. I started to have these symptoms two days back and it itches a lot. When I lay down and spread my legs, itchiness gets reduced a little bit. It burns a lot when I touch it and pee. My period is going to start in a few days.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. From the symptoms, you have mentioned, it looks like yeast or candidal infection which requires examination and treatment with antifungal. Hence, I would recommend visiting your health care provider for the same. To put your mind, easing masturbation does not cause infection, but the wrong technique or vigorous actions can cause cuts and bruises which can get infected with yeast. Yeast infections are usually due to environmental factors and it is not due to specific actions. Yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of yeast, which is commonly permitted by a change in the bacterial environment in the vagina. Anything that changes the bacterial environment, like antibiotics, wearing wet underwear, and poor hygiene can make women prone to yeast infections. So masturbation alone will not certainly give you a yeast infection. However, be aware of what you are using during your masturbation. Certain types of lubricants can change the vaginal environment or could introduce bacteria that could alter the overall environment and open up the risk of infection. Hope this was useful. Regards.
