Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I think I am pregnant because I am three weeks late on my period, have a strange discharge, and have intense pains in my vagina. I am not using any contraception at the moment. My height is 5 feet 5 inches and weighs 99 pounds. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

These symptoms, as you mention, may be seen during pregnancy, but not always. The potential causes and solutions are:

  1. Pregnancy - Of course, you will need to examine your early morning urine sample for pregnancy. Once confirmed as negative, take any of the birth control pills (package of 21 pills), one tab twice a day for 10 days (throw away the 21st pill and the inactive or dummy pills). Regardless of the cause (excluding pregnancy), you will have periods within 7 to 10 days.
  2. Vaginal infection - This is transmitted during sex. Thus, both must be treated at the same time or you will become infected the next time you have sex. You may have pain and a foul smell at the beginning due to dryness when lubrication is diminished, and towards the end when a fully erect penis hits the deepest vagina. You may also experience white, yellow, or grayish discharge with or without itching.

This infection may stop your periods because the blood flow to the inner lining of the uterus is disrupted. You will have to be examined by a gynecologist, and both you and your spouse will need an antibiotic and antifungal course. Your predicted weight is 147 to 165 pounds and 5.4 feet tall.

So, with such a low BMI (body mass index) of 15 to 16 (normal is 48 pounds/m2), your body's resistance is so low that you may develop vaginal infections, also known as bacterial vaginosis. And because of this, your hormones may be disrupted as a result of decreased cholesterol.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
