What causes fishy smell in vaginal discharge?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a very embarrassing problem with an odd odor, and taste of my vaginal discharge. My vagina smells fishy, and the taste is somewhat acidic or "tangy." The discharge is always whitish. I have had this problem since 12 years, and it has never improved. I have recently started to be more sexually active, and it has got a bit more noticeable. I would like to hear what I need to do, and how I should treat it.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns.

It is better to have a high vaginal swab test in the laboratory as it is necessary to check the organism of infection and maintain strict hygiene.

I suggest you to:

  1. Walk and exercise daily to maintain normal BMI and weight.
  2. Take a healthy and balanced diet, with less salt, sugar, oil, and spice.
  3. Use condoms to avoid sexually transmitted infections.
  4. Wear soft cotton undergarments.
  5. Take a sitz bath or sit in warm water.
  6. After swab collection, I suggest you to take a tablet of Doxycycline 100 mg (Doxycycline hydrochloride) 12 hourly and tablet of Flagyl 400 mg (Metronidazole) 8 hourly for 14 days. Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

Collect the report and discuss it here.

Thank you.
